Fuji Xerox Printer Channel recently announced the successful seizure of US $200,000 worth of counterfeit toner products after raids on two factories in China and Thailand. The anti-counterfeit operation was the result of work by investigative and legal teams appointed by Fuji Xerox Printer Channel and involved the cooperation of customs officials and law enforcement officers from various countries.
The organisations supplying the counterfeit goods out of China and Thailand now face the possibility of heavy monetary fines as well as the threat of criminal prosecution.
“The counterfeiting of toner cartridges impacts the whole printing industry. Fuji Xerox Printer Channel is committed to tackling this important issue,” said David Borg, General Manager of Fuji Xerox Printers Australia and New Zealand. “The ultimate victim of this crime is the unsuspecting customer who is paying for a genuine Fuji Xerox product but receiving a poor quality alternative. By raising awareness about the recent raids we can ensure that our customers and channel partners understand the risk of purchasing counterfeit products,” he continued.
The counterfeit operation in China was detected after investigators identified a local factory involved in producing fake Fuji Xerox cartridges. Over 60 people were employed by the counterfeiters to produce the fake toner, which was sold in both domestic and international markets.
The Thailand based operation was detected after extensive investigative work by Fuji Xerox’s team. A squad of 18 raided the factory, finding counterfeit goods throughout the building.
In both raids, cartridges illegally branded with Fuji Xerox and Xerox trademarks were seized. The products appeared identical to genuine toner cartridges. However, counterfeit toner cartridges result in poor equipment performance, low supply yields, inferior print quality and toner leakage, potentially damaging the printers in which they are used. The use of non-genuine supplies can also void the printer’s warranty.
“Over the last month alone Fuji Xerox has been involved in five major raids across Thailand and China, seizing over US $1 million in counterfeit goods,” said David Borg. “The latest raid actions have successfully tackled major manufacturers of fake toner cartridges in the APAC region and have prevented a large volume of counterfeit products from entering local markets, impacting our valued channel partners and customers.”
