Interview With Richard Haigh, Head of Staples.com.au
For December we would like to introduce Richard Haigh, Head of Staples.com.au.

SM: Richard, what are the key factors behind Staples entry into the Australian market?

Richard Haigh: Our research shows customers are lacking choice in Australia, so the launch staples.com.au is a great thing for customers. We've spent a year working out what our small business customers really want, and how best we can meet their needs.   Our customers demand range, price competitiveness and reliable delivery and we certainly aim to deliver on these but we don't believe that this is enough so, in addition, we'll be focusing on a range of little things to improve their experience.

SM: Being a new entrant into the Australian market, how would you differentiate yourself from the rest of the players?

Richard Haigh: We know that we're the new kid on the block and that we'll have to work hard to earn our place as a trusted supplier partner for Australian small business people   We're focusing on a lot of little things that matter to our customers. Free and fast  delivery, a 100% price match guarantee, no hidden charges and an easy to use website.  We've put a lot of work in to developing features and functionality on our site that will really make for a better online experience and, if we've done our job well, most of them won't even be immediately noticed.   We think that customers will be delighted to experience how easy we are to work with.

SM: What are the key changes you foresee with the entry of Staples in Australia?

Richard Haigh: More choice for customers.  Competition is great for customers and we think we can offer them a great new alternative.

SM: Will there be a Staples Office Superstore in Australia?

Richard Haigh: I don't know of any current plans, my focus to make staples.com.au the best supplier of office products for small businesses in Australia.

SM: How big is your team within Staples.com.au?

Richard Haigh: We're  a small and dedicated team here in Australia but we're  part of a team of more than 90,000 Staples  folk  globally.

SM: What is your 3-5 year vision for Staples.com.au?

Richard Haigh: Initially we're launching in NSW and ACT but overtime we plan to service the rest of Australia.    We're focussed on being the best choice in office supplies  for our customers and we are cofident that if we can live up to and exceed their expectations then growth will take care of itself.

SM: How long have you been with Staples.com.au?

Richard Haigh:
We've been working on staples.com.au for the past year. I've worked for Staples since 2005  - initially in the UK and now here in Australia .

SM: Prior to Staples were you in the office products industry? Could you give us a snapshot of your career?

Richard Haigh: I've been in retail my entire career, working for some big multinationals including UK-based retailers Tesco and B&Q. I joined Staples in 2005.

SM: On a personal note Richard, what activities do you enjoy outside of work?

Richard Haigh: Spending time with my friends and family, especially if we're out at a nice restaurant or having a few drinks.  I also like to cycle as much as I can - which isn't often enough.

Thank you Richard
